Main Beach Safety
Yamba is a beautiful but dynamic coastal environment. Understanding local conditions helps keep everyone safe.

Permanent Rip Current – South End Near Ocean Pool

There is a permanent rip next to the ocean pool at the bottom of the boardwalk. It can be tempting to swim in this area due to easy access from the stairs and what often appears to be calm water — but don’t be fooled. This rip is dangerous and is where the majority of rescues at Yamba Main Beach occur.
Please avoid swimming in this area and always choose the flagged swimming zone.
Even if you are a confident swimmer, it’s important to swim between the red and yellow flags.
Swimming outside the flags:
-
Encourages less confident swimmers to follow
-
Pulls lifesavers’ attention away from the designated safe area
-
Increases overall risk on the beach
Set the example for others — swim between the flags and help us keep everyone safe.
How to spot a Rip

Look for:
-
Darker or deeper looking water
-
Fewer breaking waves
-
Choppy or rippled surface
-
Foam or sand moving steadily offshore
If unsure, speak to a lifesaver before entering the water.

-
Swim at patrolled beaches whenever possible
-
Observe conditions before entering
-
Avoid river mouths, rocky areas, and strong currents
-
Check signage and follow lifesaver instructions

Swim within your limits

Always be honest about your swimming ability and confidence in the ocean. Conditions can change quickly, and even experienced swimmers can be caught off guard.
Calm or flat-looking water doesn’t always mean it’s safe. Submerged objects, hidden gutters, strong currents, and uneven sandbanks can remain undetected from the shore and pose significant risks to unassuming swimmers.
If you’re unsure about conditions:
-
Speak with a lifesaver before entering the water
-
Start in shallow areas and assess conditions gradually
-
Stay close to the flagged zone where assistance is immediately available
Choosing to swim within your limits helps keep you safe and allows lifesavers to focus their attention where it’s needed most.
