Historic Aussies Campaign Delivers Record Medal Haul for Yamba SLSC

Yamba Surf Life Saving Club has once again proven that a small country club can stand proudly among Australia’s best, with members delivering an extraordinary performance at the 2026 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on the Gold Coast.

Held at North Kirra Beach from 21–29 March, the Australian Titles saw Yamba competitors return home with a record medal haul across Youth, Masters and Aussies competition — a season that has undoubtedly set a new benchmark for the club.

The Youth Championships were highlighted by an historic achievement from Yamba’s Under 13 Male Surf Team of Reed Batinovic, Ziggy O’Brien, Leo Dean and Clarry Dougherty, who claimed both the NSW State and Australian Surf Teams titles. It marks the first time in the club’s history that Yamba has won an Australian Title in the Surf Teams event.

In a dominant display against some of the biggest clubs in the country, the four Yamba boys finished 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 14th in the 10-team Australian final, losing only 25 points — well ahead of Swansea Belmont on 48 points and Burleigh Heads on 62 points. Their outstanding performance drew admiration from across the surf lifesaving community and showcased the incredible depth of talent developing within Yamba SLSC.

Another standout performer was Mostyn Brown, who achieved the remarkable feat of winning the Under 14 Beach Flags double at both the NSW State and Australian Championships. Mostyn became the first Yamba member in 60 years to win an Australian Beach Flags Title, following in the footsteps of club legend Ron “Ginger” Moloney, who won his second Open Australian Beach Flags Title at Coolangatta in 1966.

Mostyn’s season was nothing short of exceptional. Remaining undefeated across all major carnivals, he claimed titles at Far North Coast Branch, NSW Country, NSW Interbranch, NSW State, Australian and Interstate level. Following his Australian Title win, Mostyn was selected in the NSW Youth State Team for the Interstate Youth Pathways Series, where he once again won the Beach Flags event for NSW, helping secure a dramatic final-event victory over Queensland.

Yamba’s Youth team finished the Championships with an impressive tally of two gold medals and one bronze medal:

At the Australian Masters Championships, Yamba achieved another remarkable milestone, becoming the only club to medal in three of the five Men’s Masters Surf Teams events — a testament to the club’s strength across all age divisions.

This incredible season has been built on the dedication and hard work of athletes, coaches, officials, families, water safety crews and supporters who continue to give so much to the club.

Congratulations to every competitor who represented Yamba SLSC at the highest level this season — both participants and medallists. The entire club can be extremely proud of what has been achieved.

2026 SLSNSW Masters Championships

Twelve Yamba Masters proudly represented the club at the State Titles in Swansea Belmont, delivering an outstanding performance against 72 competing clubs. Finishing 10th overall on the pointscore with 120 points, the team brought home an impressive haul of 7 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze medals — a fantastic achievement at state level.

Leading the charge were our gold medallists. Michael Miller claimed victory in both the 65–69 years surf race and rescue tube race, while Dave O’Brien secured gold in the 60–64 years rescue tube race. Bobbie Winger added to the tally with a win in the 70–74 years board race.

Our relay and team events were equally strong. The Over 190 years Taplin relay team of Michael Miller (swim), Peter Rheinberger (board) and Greg Goodwin (ski) took gold, as did the Over 190 years surf team of Michael Miller, Peter Rheinberger and Michael Stubbs. The Over 170 years surf team of Dave O’Brien, Dave Fleming and Paul Davis also stood atop the podium.

A tremendous effort from the entire squad — a testament to dedication, experience and the strength of Masters competition at Yamba.

2026 SLSNSW State Age Championships

Yamba SLSC sent a strong team of 30 nippers to the NSW Surf Life Saving Age Titles held at Swansea Belmont SLSC in Newcastle from February 19-22 and the team came home with outstanding results.

The first day medal count of 1 gold and 1 silver produced great excitement amongst the Yamba team and this quickly gained momentum on Day 2 with a further gold, silver and bronze medal being added.  Day 3 saw a further gold and bronze, only to be eclipsed by an amazing haul of gold, silver and 2 bronze to round out Day 4.

Yamba members won a club record 11 medals in total with 4 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals over the 4 days of competition against the best junior lifesavers in the State.

The club finished 15th in the carnival pointscore on 68 points against the 74 competing clubs and finished a close 3rd in the Country Clubs pointscore behind Lennox Head on 78 points and Warilla Barrack Point on 70 points.

Whilst all team members gave it their all in individual and teams events to progress through heats, semi-finals and some on to finals, there were two exceptional individual performances with gold medals won by Mostyn Brown on the beach and Zara O’Brien in the water.

The standout performance of the carnival showing the depth of the club’s swimming strength was the Under 13 male surf team  who finished 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th across the finish line in the field of 40, to win the Surf Teams gold medal, completely upstaging their metropolitan rivals such as defending champions Swansea Belmont, Manly, Coogee, Cronulla and Wanda.

A large team of club members and supporters was on hand to assist with tasks on the beach and to provide a very enthusiastic support squad for all our Nippers.

In addition, at the ‘Adaptive Championships’ held in conjunction with the State Age Titles, Maverick McLennan was very proud to come home with 5 gold medals across his events – well done Mav!
