Surf Education & Training

Education and training are at the heart of surf lifesaving, ensuring our members are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge to keep our beaches safe.

At Yamba SLSC, our team of trainers, assessors and facilitators deliver a range of nationally recognised courses through the Australian Lifesaving Academy NSW. Surf Life Saving NSW is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), providing accredited training and qualifications.

Courses

Our Education Team delivers a variety of core awards at the club, including resuscitation, radio operations, the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC), Bronze Medallion (Certificate II in Public Safety – Aquatic Rescue), IRB crewperson and Silver Medallion IRB driver qualifications. Further development opportunities are available through Branch and State facilitated courses. These include First Aid, Advanced Resuscitation, Silver Medallion Beach Management, as well as pathways into training, assessing and facilitating roles within surf lifesaving.

Pathways to Patrol

Our Senior Nipper program provides an introduction to lifesaving, with Resuscitation and Surf Rescue Certificates encouraged for U12, U13 and U14 members. Members who are not part of the Nipper program are also able to begin their journey from the Surf Rescue Certificate stage.

To enrol, Surf Rescue Certificate candidates must be at least 13 years of age and complete a 200m pool swim within five minutes, while Bronze Medallion candidates must be at least 15 years of age and complete a 400m pool swim within nine minutes. Most courses also require an online theory component to be completed prior to attending.

Upon successful completion of the Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion, members are assigned to a patrol team and begin regular patrol duties. Patrol allocations are managed by the Lifesaving Director to ensure a balanced spread of qualifications across all rostered patrols.

Holding either award carries an expectation to complete allocated patrol hours. Regular attendance is essential to maintaining active membership, supporting public safety and ensuring the club meets its patrol obligations set by Surf Life Saving NSW.
