Surf Sports has a long and proud history within the Surf Life Saving Association. The Surf Sports aspect of Surf Life Saving plays a significant role in ensuring that our members have the ability and passion to meet the changing environment within which we deliver our essential lifesaving services. Yamba SLSC has been a strong member of the SLSA Surf Sports community dating back to its very early years.
Surf Sports competition within our club begins with the Under 8’s progressing through the Nipper years to Under 14’s, before continuing to the Cadets/Juniors/Opens and finally Masters where it is not unusual to see 70-80 year olds still involved in training and competition!
Competitors must gain the relevant ‘proficiency’ award each year to enable them to be eligible to compete. Competitions/Carnivals are held across Club/Branch/Country/State/National and International levels.

Compete for Yamba

Yamba Surf Life Saving Club is part of the Far North Coast Branch of Surf Life Saving NSW, stretching from Fingal in the north to Yamba in the south. Our surf sports program operates under FNC Branch and SLSNSW guidelines, providing safe and competitive pathways for members to compete at branch, state and national carnivals throughout the season.

Carnivals

Surf carnival participation is encouraged at Yamba SLSC as a means of promoting fitness, skill and experience. This also helps to promote a healthy lifestyle, comradery and sportsmanship amongst competitors.
There are several areas of competition:
SWIM
Swimming ability is a prime factor in surf lifesaving with events being designed to encourage members to keep fit for their lifesaving duties.
Events include: Surf race, Rescue Tube race, Surf Teams
BOARD
Mastering the art of board paddling can be crucial in performing rescues. Yamba has a strong history in board paddling with members who have achieved at the highest levels of SLS board competition. Competition takes place on craft with particular specifications.
Events include: Board race, Board Relay, Board rescue
SKI
The minimum age for surf ski competitors is 16yrs, and competitors must have attained their Bronze Medallion. Events take place on specialised craft that must be approved by SLS.
Events include: Single Ski, Double Ski, Ski Relay
IRON PERSON
This is a multi-discipline endurance event encompassing swim, board, ski and run legs all within the one event.
BEACH
Beach Events include: Beach Sprint, Beach Flags, Beach Relay, 1km/2km Run
Over the years Yamba Surf Club has produced its share of champion boat crews and boat ‘sweeps’. Boats performed an important role in rescues for many years but have been replaced with the much faster IRB’s and jet skis in recent times. However, competition still takes place, and the club is always looking for members to make up the teams of four required for training and competition. Male and female crews are both catered for.
To participate in rowing surf boats, competitors must be 16 yrs old and hold a Bronze Medallion.
Information can be obtained through the Surf Sports Director or the Boat Captain.

Our club coaching is carried out by volunteer members with expertise in various disciplines across the Surf Sports arena.
Training schedules for both water and beach events at Yamba SLSC are organised each season to fit in with coaches’ and members’ availability and needs, and are communicated through our club newsletters and social media channels.
